Guanajuato's
climate, its central location, its cultural ambience, and its friendly people
make it an especially fine place to immerse yourself in the language, culture,
and history of Mexico.
Guanajuato is the capital of the Mexican state of the same name. It is located in the Mesa Central, about a four hours drive north-northwest from Mexico City. At an elevation of 6,650 feet (2,027 meters), the city enjoys a temperate climate year-round (not too hot, not too cold). Summertime temperatures average 70°F (21°C) during the day and 59°F (15°C) at night; daytime/nighttime averages during the winter are 68/41°F (20/5°C). Refreshing late-afternoon showers or thunderstorms can be expected daily during the rainy season (June-August); at
other times of the year, rain is infrequent. A short time before your arrival
you will be informed of the likely weather for your stay to help you prepare
your trip.
The city of Guanajuato was founded in 1554. It became one the richest of Mexico's colonial cities because of the vast silver deposits found in the surrounding mountains. Several silver mines are still operating and are open for tours.
Other attractions in Guanajuato include numerous museums, among them
the Museo-Casa Diego Rivera (Guanajuato is the birthplace of Mexico's
most famous muralist), Finally, Guanajuato's central location in the heart of Mexico also makes it an ideal "home base" for daytrips or weekend jaunts throughout central Mexico. For daytrips, you can explore Dolores Hidalgo (45 minutes by car or bus), cradle of Mexican independence, or visit the artist community of San Miguel de Allende (1 hour away), or the historic city of Querétaro (about 1½ hours away). Farther afield is the state of Michoacán. Explore the museums and fine architecure of the capital city of Morelia (3 hours away), or visit the lakeside community of Patzcuaro (4 hours) with its magnificent artesania, or make a special visit (in season) to the monarch butterfly sanctuary near Angangueo (a 5-hour trip). Another fine weekend destination is Guadalajara. Mexico's second largest city (only 4 hours by bus). And, of course, the Pacific Coast beaches of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo (each a day's travel away) offer a very different kind of getaway. Closer to "home base" is the modern city of León, just 45 minutes from Guanajuato. If you simply must have an American hamburger, see the latest summer movies releases, or shop 'til you drop in a modern enclosed and air-conditioned mall, visit the Plaza Mayor there.
